The Espejo Organization for the Arts and Rabbithole Projects are honored to present Waiting, a photography exhibit by Serbian-Dutch artist Svetlana Jovanovic. On this one-night-only show, Jovanovic will present a series of surreal photographic portraits that question the existing cliches of femininity. Borrowing from the language of fashion photography, Jovanovic’s work provokes an unease and ambiguity, encouraging the viewer to recognize their own objectifying practices and expectations of the female body.
Using isolated and disengaged characters in dreamlike settings, Jovanovic’s solo exhibition, Waiting, features theatrical portraits of women emanating loneliness and alienation. Often using monochromatic and digitally manipulated images, Jovanovic’s explores references of romanticism and surrealism.
Born in Serbia, Svetlana received an MA in Psychology from the University of Belgrade. In 1999, she moved to The Hague, The Netherlands, where she worked with the United Nations. She has also studied at the Royal Academy of Arts (KABK) in The Hague, Nouva Accademia di Belle Arti NABA in Milan, and the International Center of Photography in New York City. In 2015, she moved to NYC, where she is currently living and working on personal and commercial art projects. Svetlana has been published by Vogue Italia, New York Arts Magazine, Beautiful Decay, Musée Magazine, Elements Magazine, Art Reveal Magazine, and many other art publications. She has also exhibited her work in galleries and art spaces in Belgrade, Milan, London, Ljubljana, The Hague, and New York.
The exhibition is presented by Rabbithole Projects. Rabbithole Projects is a contemporary art space located on the waterfront of the Dumbo arts district in Brooklyn. Since 2006, the gallery has exhibited works by emerging and mid-career artists, presenting over 60 group and solo shows as a participant gallery in Dumbo's First Thursday series of art walks. The space operates as a project room, providing artists a forum for showing new works and works-in-progress. Rabbithole Projects also hosts a series of special events, from movie screenings, readings, yoga classes, and the Brooklyn Creative program of artist workshops.
